There is No Forehead Chevron on the Part 5 Mask

I don't know what else to say about this. There just isn't. They say human beings are great at finding patterns in noise, and I think that's basically why mask painters tend to paint a little ghost chevron into the forehead of their Roy masks, even though it makes zero sense to do so. All you're seeing on the left side is brown weathering applied around the eye with a sea sponge. The pattern appears to come to a rather irregular point in the way the old part 4 chevron used to, but its just a coincidence. There is no chevron, or hint of a chevron on the forehead.

Its really just paint.

  1. I feel like part of it was from casting over the old part 4 chevron. It could have finely shown through in the weathering.

    1. the blanks would have had to be almost paper thin for that to be the case. then somehow the artist would have had to incorporate that ultra-slight impression into his paint work, perhaps by sanding--but there's no evidence of sanding on the part 5 mask, it was just blotching on browns with a sea sponge. look at the photos. there's no chevron. its just all the darker brown splotches converging on the forehead above the left eye. there's no triangle of any kind.

  2. Thank you! I have always wondered that myself and never seen it in the films.

  3. I 100% agree and have always felt this way even when I very first started painting these masks and really started examining them a year ago. I have also gotten in several debates about the no middle chevron on the part 5. The proof is in the pictures as you’ve shown. The false identity is people’s eyes want to envision a chevron there as the weathering and base coat break through slightly form the shape of one in the “correct” area. No offense to anyone who still incorporates the “ghost” middle chevron on their masks as that’s what the people “see” but it is simply NOT there.

    1. Terribly grainy photo will give you bad results

    2. That's some magical "dirt pattern" that formed the same curves, including the same difference from one side to the other in the distance from the eye holes and vent holes, as is present on the stunt mask in Part 3.

    4. It's just lighting, you can see that effect in any replica mask

    5. besides, by the time David got the part 4 mask it only had half a chevron, so how is it going to create a full chevron "impression" in the blanks? makes zero sense.

  5. Man, this is great, but can we talk about how 3/4 of new hockey mask painters are removing about half of the basecoat on the front of the mask to show through the white they’ve painted the mask on the inside, aside from the outer edges they’ve painted blue? I think if a Roy mask were around today to have detailed photographs like the masks that Mario Kirner has put in his book, we would see that Miller was too lazy to go back and remove half of his basecoat exposing THAT much of the plastic blank. One artist did it in the beginning and it was his cool take on the Roy mask and now almost everyone is copying that instead of the actual movie mask.

    1. Oh I agree, some artists seem to just want to copy the guy in question, even when he's just doing his own thing, which totally mystifies me. People tend to make this mask WAY too yellow as well.

I don't think this mask had any sanding at all. David just layered up two shades of brown with a sea sponge and that was it. No clear coat or anything.

    2. I know that a lot of people don’t necessarily follow accuracy when painting a lot of the series masks especially one like the part 5 that’s really hard to tell what exactly is going on as it changes so much from picture to picture. People have been sanding away base coat to expose the inside of there PETG blanks for awhile, I don’t think one said person did it and everyone started copying them, maybe someone did it better than everyone else and it stuck out more but anyone can look at say screen caps of the part 6 and even specific ones of the part 5 and see where areas of the top coat were purposely worn away to expose blank and said color underneath. To say everyone is doing it based off of one independent artist is very foolish.

    3. There is no evidence the part 5 mask was clear PETG, so most artists don't treat it as such. And of course I know most of the masks were, and most artists paint them accordingly. Stop copying other people's work or coming on my blog and acting like I don't know what I'm talking about with indie artists.

  7. Idk, the issue with that is.. that if you place the masks.. the 4 and the 5 together similar to how Auz did in his gif you can actually see.. that that so called "mis happen" actually lines up with the part 4 chevron. This seems to be the case also because it has jagged lines.. as did the part 4 chevron because some how it had a cut on it and the pointy part of the chevron seems to be a bit lower or higher than the middle part.

I honestly wish we could find the actual mask.. wish someone would talk to people in paramount to send us pictures or something it would be great.

I also agree, that people are trying to copy said artists with the whole sanding the mask to show the white bits in which the mask never even had.. there was some white sanded areas but they were scuffs showing the ivory paint of the mask and not the inside.

The inside could have easily been all blue.. but then it's also another argument like the colors of the actual mask.

    1. Yeah its just really weird that we have masks for every film every film except part 5 and they had so many masks in part 5. I wonder if they're all in a stack in Frank Mancuso's closet.

  8. Was wondering if you could confirm something. Is the base coat of Roy’s mask the blue color of the chevrons, then painted over everything but the chevrons? Someone told me that’s why you see blue paint around the edges in later scenes because that’s the undercoat. But in a lot of photos the chevrons look like stickers.

    1. That's an unconfirmed theory we've been tossing around since the forum days. Personally, I don't think it's true. Chevrons could have been painted or they could have been stickers. Wish we could find the mask!
