Movie Mold VS Mask on a Stunt Mold Cowl

This piece was recently produced by Nathan Stafford Studios from the Freddy vs Jason stunt mold. It was likely sculpted large to accomodate the burn suit underneath and any breathing gear the actor needed. It was at least used during the burn scene in the corn field.

Alice Cooper with Mysterious Part 5 Mask

Here's something you don't see much: Alice Cooper did a photo shoot with an unknown hockey mask. It has the basic paint job of a Part 6, but is clearly unfinished, having no snap holes drilled, no axe cut, and appears too narrow to be from the buck used in Part 6. It's possible that this is an unused mask from Part 5 that Reel FX had laying around in the shop. Oddly enough, the vent hole that sits over where the axe cut should be is out of place, so this might itself be a recast of any of the early masks. Alice also doesn't have any makeup on, so this was evidently an entirely different shoot from the one he did with C. J. Graham.

Friday the 13th Mask Shows Up on Pawn Stars

The mask appears to be a recast of one of the promotional masks made for Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Blood. The original promotional masks are seen below. So it's probably not worth much by itself. Richard Brooker has been gone a long time and apparently his signature can fetch some money these days so the price quoted might be reasonable. It seems weirdly high to me but I'm not an autograph collector. The $6,500 ask was wild!

Here's a shot of the promotional masks made by the MMI in 1988. You can see that the Pawn Stars mask has the same distinctive cheek cut, which is not accurate to the hero mask.

My Part 8 Mask (Slightly Updated)

Every so often I make some minor modifications to my own masks that only I care about. So here it is! I recently trimmed a bit of the perimeter off my part 8 mask so that it's a little closer to the movie mask.

While my mask is accurate to what I remember when I saw it in person, I've been tempted to just sand it down and repaint the whole thing now that we have these astonishing Prop Store photos to use as reference. Your memory only goes so far. I didn't even realize, for example, that the straps are brown, rather than black until I saw the recent auction photos, or that the black weathering looks a little cloudier on the movie mask.

New Part 8 Movie Mold Mask Surfaces

Tony Lazarowich, a British Columbia-based special effects artist, recently posted a reel on his Instagram page where he showcases a Part 8 Jason mask. Lazarowich says in the video that he studied under the effects chief from the film (presumably referring to Jamie Brown) and was given the honor of making the masks for the movie.

The mask is definitely interesting. The blank itself looks very accurate to those used in Jason Takes Manhattan, having the telltale horizontal crack on the back that is seen in the Part 8 movie masks, a result of being recasted from a flawed Part 6 blank that was pulled after the buck had cracked through the mouth area. The mask also has an interesting split in the side, something we also see in another Part 8 spare mask that was on eBay over a decade ago, that may have been caused by an FX artist accidentally cracking the notoriously brittle acrylic while going about his work.

The vents appear to be drilled the right size and have the characteristic crudeness you usually see in movie masks. The color doesn't appear accurate to the hero mask to my eye. The straps and strap connections don't look accurate and the weathering doesn't look nearly as detailed as the hero mask, although stunt and other spare or promotional masks were sometimes painted more crudely. The mask does have the correct nylon blackouts for the eyes but the hero mask blackouts were just hot-glued in-- this appears to be done differently. In any case, the mask itself seems likely to have come from production in my estimation.

Really cool piece and it's nice to see Tony has taken good care of it over the years. Thanks to Mario for bringing this to my attention.

My Movie Mold Freddy vs Jason Mask

Have been trying to get a movie mold "vs" mask for years, and now I've finally got one! Still looking to acquire Jason X movie mold pieces if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Comparison with my old NECA vs mask below. Almost the same size and the features are basically the same, although the movie mask is narrower and longer.

My paint job was based on the "corn field mask" used through much of the film (see below).

The Masks of Freddy vs Jason

As far as I can tell, seven hockey masks were used during the filming of Freddy vs. Jason. The masks were touched up a number of times and appear with very different weathering throughout the film, probably owing to not being clear coated (the main mask from Part 5 was also retouched several times). There are certain details that indicate masks that appear to be different are in fact the same, such as distinctive scratches or vent hole damage, so I've summarized what I've found below, with credit for updates and corrections to Nathan Stafford of the Horror Costume Index.

1. The Corn Field Mask: This mask is characterized by the wide, shallow forehead chevron. This mask had more subtle early in the film. Prop collector Paul Wintner bought this mask a few years ago but I think he's since sold it.

2. The Hospital Mask: This mask had a deep forehead chevron. This mask was also used in the resurrection scene in the beginning of the movie, among others. You can tell it's the same because the chevron is damaged in exactly the same way. This mask was also used during the resurrection scene, the first kill and in a number of promotional stills. Currently in private hands.

3. The Boiler Room Mask 1: This was the unscratched mask used in the initial confrontation between Freddy and Jason in Freddy's boiler room. Currently owned by The Ultimate Freddy vs. Jason Archive.

4. The Boiler Room Mask 2: This mask was used in the closeups where Freddy initially scratches the mask. Owned by a private collector. Photo credit: Ultimate Freddy vs. Jason Archive.

5. The Boiler Room Mask 3: This mask had unusually wide cut eyes, making it look distinct from all others in the film. The scratches are also slightly different from the above Boiler Room 2 mask.

6. The Ambulance Mask: While this mask also had a shallow chevron, it is distinct from the Corn Field Mask in a number of details. This mask was also used during the promotional "weigh-in" of Freddy and Jason as evinced by the distinct vent hole damage.

7. The End Scene Mask: This is the one owned by Mario Kirner for quite a few years. It's the narrowest and most damaged of the masks used onscreen and was recently sold at auction for nearly $100K.

Jason Unmasked in "Freddy vs. Jason"

For a third post in our Freddy vs. Jason series, here's the only behind-the-scenes shot I've ever seen of Ken Kirzinger in full face makeup. It's from the ambulance scene, where Kelly Rowland has to pull Jason's mask up to give him CPR. Pretty good facial design, so it's a shame we didn't see all of it on film. I found this on Facebook, can't remember the source except that it was a photo of a photo that was printed on paper, so it may have been something Ken was selling at a convention. Someone correct me if you know the source.
