I've had this piece nearly nine years, but its time to let it go. This is #2 of the run produced by Marshall Bean in 2017 after a 3D-printed enlargement of his re-tool of a re-cast of an original Part 4 stunt mold mask. I painted it myself using a speckled technique I tried to imitate from my old His Unlucky Day bust. This takes a lot of time but gives the skin an eerily lifelike quality compared to airbrushing. This copy is also unique in that I built up part of the jawline to get it a hair closer to the movie sculpt. 

 

 

New Part IV Movie Mold Bust Comparisons

This is an incredible piece of work. Its designed to be a 1:1 reproduction of the makeup bust sculpted by James Kagel for use in The Final Chapter. As many fans know, this design was used for both of the FX dummies seen near the end of the film. I took some photos to line the piece up as perfectly as possible with our best source material from each angle. Any fan-made piece is going to have a few quirks but overall its a stunning reproduction.

My dudes. Oh my god. This thing is just beautiful. This is a near-perfect recreation of the original facial design from Friday the 13th Part 4. It was created using an ultra-rare, production-made latex face kept for 40 years by one of the film's effects artists and digitally combining it with an early generation copy of the well-known "Mangler" bust, itself cast directly from an effects dummy used in the film. The face is the exact face that was cut from the cowl used by Ted White during filming, giving us unprecedented accuracy and definition. This is a presently limited-run piece being offered by Nathan Stafford of the Horror Costume Index. 

In Nathan's own words:

"This project began in 2023 when I acquired an original face cast, cut from a production Final Chapter hood. I had it scanned to preserve every last detail. I then sourced a prototype Mangler to composite the head for its superior form originating from a screen used dummy. I spent nearly 2 years scanning and digitally combining/shaping the two parts, matching overlays on various angles, testing numerous sizes, refining in clay, and building out the shoulders to get everything just right. The result is, in my opinion, the truest representation of the original sculpt and I’m incredibly proud to share it with you."

Rare Footage of Ted White in Makeup Chair

 Courtesy of Nathan Stafford of the Horror Costume Index, here is some of the clearest footage we've seen from Tom Savini's old VHS tapes of Ted White getting made up as Jason by Kevin Yagher for the unmasking scene in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. There is also some machete dummy footage. 

This came off a DVD copy of the Tom Savini documentary Smoke and Mirrors.  

This is likely the clearest look we'll ever get of Ted in full makeup nearly forty years ago and it's glorious! Just beautiful work by everyone involved.

Comparison Between The Part 4 Sculpts

 

Here's a quick side by side of the two designs created by James Kagel for Friday the 13th Part 4. At right is a latex copy of his original sculpt that was used in pre-production to create the two machete-hit dummies and the cowls worn by Ted White. At left is a revision created during production that was used for the appliances worn by White at the end of the film.

Only realized recently that the two sculpts are about 75% identical. Kagel added mass to the left cheek, brow and eye; the center bulge at the top of the forehead; the dorsum nasi and tip of the nose; the contours of the right cheek and chin; and (not pictured) removed some mass from the back of the head and slightly altered the shape. The rest of it appears to be identical.

I can see why he did it though. The final sculpt definitely looks cooler.

Couple of Shots of the Part 4 Machete Dummy

I think both of these were screen grabs from the documentary Crystal Lake Memories. Today, though restored somewhat, the dummy is in very poor shape. I'm told that the head has shrunk significantly and most of the foam latex is hard as a rock. Some of the internal mechanics of the head are collapsing as well, so the restoration work involved propping up the machete wound to lengthen the life of the structures inside.

NEW Photos of Part 4 Appliances

WOW. Kevin Yagher, who painted and applied the appliances on Ted White during production of Friday the 13th Part 4 just shared some new photos of his work during production. Anyone trying to get an accurate paint job should have no problem with these beauties. The intense black shading around the eyes makes Jason look unexpectedly zombie-like compared to fan paint-ups I've seen.

I believe only the top photo is of the final sculpt; the others seem to be of the initial sculpt used for the FX dummies. Really awesome to see these photos surface after more than 35 years.

Tom Savini Finally Releases Secret BTS Video

Courtesy of Jo Nobile, here are some great screen grabs from a VHS video that was recorded while Ted White was in the makeup chair for Part 4. As featured in the new Tom Savini documentary on Chiller.

These are the clearest frames from this video I've ever seen, and some of the best surviving images of the original makeup. You can just make out the pink and blue tones used to create the illusion of depth and translusence as well as some of the mottling and spotting detailing the skin. Nice paint work by Kevin Yagher.
