New Blanks - A Comparison

One of the things I've obsessed over as a mask painter is the eyes. You can't really get a screen-accurate look to a Jason mask without getting the eye cuts right. And you can't get the eye cuts right if you don't have correctly shaped eye sockets.

The eyes on the Part 3 movie masks were big and sharply defined. They were also, roughly, egg-shaped, coming in close to the nose and had slightly different contours. Though it can be hard to see in screen shots, viewing an original Part 3 pull at the Hollywood museum showed me exactly what they are supposed to look like.

Faithfully reproducing this shape, size and depth enabled me to get the big, accurate eyes we see in these early movie masks.

I still have Part 3 and 4 style clear PETG blanks available. Email me at farrelljm1122 (at) hotmail (dot) com

  1. I never thought about this before, but there are no cracks in the paint on that mask, indicating that the heavy cracking on the hero mask and the far lighter cracking on the stunt mask were organic products of wear.

    1. It's possible, but I think more likely the three masks were just three different experiments in weathering--one cracked, one heavily scratched, one just sanded, and the director picked which ones he wanted onscreen.

    2. Right. I also wonder if they put the ax cut in the HM mask prior to the making of Part 5.

  2. I don't think it was even painted for part 3. My theory is that it was a left over blank from part 3 that was given to and painted by the part 5 crew. The paint style is nothing like what the part 3 crew were even thinking (scuffs, paint chips, and semi-gloss finish resembling an actual goalie mask). But it matches the Roy quite a bit.

    1. Seeing the Hollywood museum mask in person its clear that it was covered in a yellowing antiquing varnish like the part 3 masks-- this alone is a strong indicator that it was painted during part 3 production.
