HLM Repaint w/ Ultimate III

I finally got around to putting my ultimate part 3 combo together: Crash's superb "Hideous Looking Man", paired with a vintage olive drab Big Mac shirt and the best part 3 hock I've ever done, as accurate to the movie mask as I have ever gotten. I'm real happy with this one and it will be one of my few keepers, along with my HUD, SSN New Blood and my own CJ sculpt.

The HLM has been repainted a much darker reddish-tan to more accurately (in my analysis) reflect the movie paint job.

Sorry I haven't updated in like 6 weeks, my life is full of clutter at present. Couple of things, I will be a writer for Michael-Myers.net and have a few articles I'm getting together at present that will end up on the home page, so my thanks to Derek for letting me write about horror on one of the greatest horror sites on the web. Whatever gets published there I'll probably throw up on here too.

Also my part 6 sculpt has been molded, but the mold was damaged during de-molding, which I finally finished repairing today. The prototype pull will be done later this week or this weekend.

Why Horror?

Occasionally I use this blog to veer off topic into intellectual aspects of Friday the 13th or horror in general. This is one of those times.

I was thinking today, having begun a new job in the non-profit world with a bunch of people who are, well, not devout horror fans like myself and would probably raise an eyebrow if they knew I have been painting hockey masks for the past two years. Not that their opinion matters of course, but it made me consider... how would I explain it? What is the appeal of horror, one, for those of us who adore it so, and two, for the rest of culture?

I've never really read any good articles on the topic, but I can say, without equivocation, that the Jason mask is globally iconic symbol. Looking at google stats, my blog viewers here (you guys) are not just in the U.S. and Canada, but in Japan, UK, Norway, Finland, Germany, Chile, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand etc. The iconic hockey mask has a global appeal, a fact which many non-horror fans find puzzling and sometimes... disturbing. Why do all these people love a fictional killer so much?

I find horror an incredibly fascinating genre, always have, always will. I don't just love contemporary horror, I even watch the early stuff, like the primitive but incredible Expressionist film Nosferatu (1922) and recently watched the earliest filmed version of Frankenstein from 1910. While somewhat challenging to sit through at times, these early experiments in horror, lacking even basic technologies like color and sound, were forced to get creative in order to convey the terror they were trying to get across. Hence, Graf Orlock's grotesque and innovative appearance and some killer scenes that are to this day among the most iconic in the genre.

Horror has evolved quite a bit since then, but I think its the only genre of film that explores, and by necessity, pushes the boundaries of what society considers acceptable forms of celluloid entertainment. Over the past 100 years it has explored and woven together mysticism and occultism, ancient folklore and modern urban legends, the depths of human depravity, mental illness and self-righteous retribution. It can often tell cautionary tales, as with Friday the 13th, about being too fancy free in your teen years, or just gross you out (like "Hatchet"), but its guaranteed to get Roger Ebert's blood boiling. Ebert hated the original Friday the 13th, incredibly tame by modern standards, so much he posted Betsy Palmer's contact info on his TV show so his viewers could send her hate mail! What a fuck nut.

Having been a part of the slasher/horror community for over two years now, it seems to me that artists are attracted to horror, which is part of what has made it so comfortable for me. Horror and sci-fi definitely have some of the best visuals and creature designs in film, some of the most innovative and instantly recognizable characters (from Dracula to Freddy and Pinhead) and there always seems to be a lot of mysteries to unlock (like Pinhead's little box, for example). The best horror is about what it doesn't show you, what it leaves to your imagination. Watching Paranormal Activity for the first time today, I can say the writer really understands horror. The villain is never seen but only implied, and some of the most terrifying moments take place off-camera. Horror is a genre for thinkers and explorers as well as artists, as well as nearly anyone who can appreciate the darker realities of our existence.

Horror is often about gore as well, which has been one of the sticking points that ruffles the feathers of the world's soccer moms and evangelical preachers who have tried to clamp down on horror in the past for fear it taint their "culture" or their "children" or whatever they try to tell us. Like rock and roll, hip hop and other edgy genres, horror isn't doing its job if someone isn't pissed off, calling up the MPAA or their congressmen to get some exploitation film banned in the U.S., thereby ensuring cult status. Sean Cunningham's "Last House on the Left", probably his greatest work next to Friday the 13th, showed people their own grisly reality. No monsters, no demons or witches, just vicious murdering rapists. Real life horror as entertainment raises all kinds of issues for censors and soccer moms that they don't like to admit exist and don't want to deal with, and there is something incredibly real in that. "Halloween" for example is about latent evil beneath the veneer of peace in 20th century American suburbia. Not something your average middle class family likes to hear about.

The intense, visceral experience most people can't help but feel during their first viewing of "Last House on the Left" is something you don't get from watching "The Ten Commandments" or even "The Godfather." Horror stands alone in providing that experience. Other genres try to make people feel inspired or entertained, but horror really challenges people, really gets adrenaline and testosterone circulating, and can leave you drained or feeling... changed. If you don't believe me, go watch "Salo" (1975) and tell me it didn't make you ill. Now try to name a film from a more "acceptable" mainstream genre that provided that intense of an experience. "Titanic" maybe? Haha. By the way, people in Italy were so horrified by "Salo" they lynched the director, even though he merely presented a film version of literature written by the Marquis de Sade in the seventeenth century. Intense.

I think that's what I really like about it. Like with music, I don't think its really worth much if it isn't drawing you in and turning your brain into hamburger it isn't horror. It may not be enlightening or have a positive message, but who wants to listen to that shit anyway?

Ultimate III No. 7

After a lot of study on these, I finally have an ultimate Ultimate III and this one is going to be my final keeper, and very likely, the final Ultimate III I will ever produce. Thanks to photo enhancements and a lot of trial and error with hocks I am finally satisfied with the accuracy of this thing down to the cracks, the eye shapes and sizes, the color and the straps, etc. are all dead on to the movie mask, making this the most accurate reproduction of the original to date. The owners of the other six will have a rare piece indeed. I had Richard Brooker sign this at Monster Mania last Saturday as well, so its not leaving my collection.

Rooster Tail mystery solved

Last year I posted that a restaurant owner in Warren, CT was claiming that the final battle scene in Friday the 13th part 2 was actually filmed in the basement of his barn, directly behind the Rooster Tail Inn. After talking with cast members John Furey and Amy Steel at Monster Mania yesterday, as well as other sources close to the filming, the truth has been revealed. The Rooster Tail barn was used as a prop shop during shooting, but no filming was done there. The final battle was filmed, according to Amy and John, at the Jason shack built on the west side of North Spectacle Pond by the crew as it appears on film.

On a related note I had a blast at Monster Mania and had a great time talking to John Furey, Bill Randolph and the ever-lovely Lauren Marie Taylor, as well as V.C. Dupree and Richard Brooker. The cast members seem at least as excited about doing conventions and meeting fans as the fans are and everyone was wonderful to meet. Because I was only there Saturday and spent most of the day at Q&A's I didn't get to meet Sean Cunningham or Kane Hodder, but hopefully future conventions will remedy that. My interest in all things Jason has been waning lately as other parts of my life have taken center stage, but a great convention reaffirms your love for the franchise and its characters, as always.

Hockey Mask Hiatus

Hi

So I've gotten a little burned out on hocks lately and there are a lot of other things I need to spend time on... my sculpt is certainly one of them. So aside from my current agreements with a handful of customers, I will not be accepting new hock orders until further notice. Might take a month or two and focus on other stuff, assuming my other income sources hold.

You may, however, see a few new hocks anyway on here... I have four more customer's masks to do, and still need to do a LOT for my own collection, which is incredibly sparse at present. And I need to finish my frickin sculpt!!! I'm finally satisfied with the form and I've begun detailing and it looks soooooooo coool.

The Murders that Spawned a Legend

I've always been fascinated by the opening sequence of 'Friday the 13th'. It offers the only glimpse we ever really see into Camp Crystal Lake in its prime in the summer of 1958, before its reputation as "Camp Blood" and its decades-long history of teen murders... yellow-shirted counselors sit peacefully around a camp fire singing traditional American songs while the young campers... Jason's contemporaries, some of whom would have known him before his drowning the previous summer... sleep peacefully, oblivious to the horror that was about to commence.

It is never made explicit that the first two murder victims of Camp Crystal Lake, Barry and Claudette, were the ones responsible for Jason's drowning the prior year, but it seems like a logical conclusion. Their brutal deaths, his from a machete to the abdomen, hers (offscreen) by a machete across the throat by the demented camp cook, twenty-eight-year-old Pamela Voorhees, set it all up-- you have sex, you die.

As little as we are shown of the 1958 murders, we seem to know even less about the actors who played them. According to CampBlood.net, the actors, Willie Adams and Debra S. Hayes were dating in real life when they filmed their short but historic roles as the first victims. Willie's IMDb shows Friday the 13th and nothing else... same with her. No further film career, no horror convention appearances I am aware of, no definite facebook or LinkedIn presence, no interviews, nothing on google. Would be interesting to know what happened to these two.

His Unlucky Day comparison

Honestly, I've said it before on this blog and I'll say it again, this is the best Jason bust out there... period. Mine will finally be in the mail in a few days and I know it will be well worth the wait. Check out this comparison...

At left is James's prototype. When you are trying to create 1:1 accuracy on a 3 dimensional object from 2D photos there are a lot of decisions to make, as well as overall design decisions and its obvious here what James was going for when you compare with the original movie sculpt at right, and how it looked on Ted. Because of distortions in the prosthesis created by the dentures, the mouth as seen onscreen is different from what we see in the original sculpt. To capture the purity of the design as envisioned by James Kagel, James basically copied the original sculpt, line for line and opened the mouth to insert the dentures. That way we don't see any of the accidental distortions caused by Ted actually wearing the pieces, but a pure form of the design as it was intended to look. I have one word for this--

Dick Warlock's mask sold?

It would appear so, according to Mr. Warlock, though the new owner is anonymous. The holy grail of Friday the 13th props and the only mask to be seen in four films (counting the prologue of part 7), it could be worth upwards of $40,000. We in the fan and artist community can only hope it is someone who will provide some better photos than those currently in circulation.

Mr. Warlock served as stunt coordinator for Friday the 13th part 5 and has owned the mask since the film wrapped in 1985. He is also one of the kindest and most fan-friendly of Friday the 13th alums, although like most of us, he doesn't like to get harassed with too many emails ;)

What is Friday the 13th about?

I have been contemplating this lately... most film critics (and even many fans) find little artistic value in slasher films, which are generally considered thoughtless, shocking and morbidly entertaining for merely entertainment's sake.

For me they always had a little more value. I posed a few thoughts and observations to Victor Miller, the creator of Jason Voorhees and screen writer for the original 'Friday the 13th.' Victor is a very cool guy and I've talked to him a few times on political topics over facebook. He basically agreed that there is a theme or moral to Friday the 13th, as with many horror films. Below is my email and his response.

Hi Victor

So I've been thinking about the horror era that the original Friday the 13th was written in and I have a question that really only you are qualified to answer.

A lot of the classic horror films of the 70's and 80's were made by young, indie film makers, many with a social axe to grind. Halloween, for example, can be thought of as exploring the idea of latent evil in American suburbia... the underpinning theme of Nightmare on Elm Street films, according to Wes Craven, is teens dealing with parental neglect.

I have always thought of Friday the 13th as a commentary, even if unintended, on youthful indulgence and carelessness. Mrs. Voorhees was, through her rage and grief, attempting to correct an evil that can never be corrected, or really even punished, because it was committed accidentally by two careless, sexually indulgent teenage counselors. The 70's were a self-indulgent time in many respects (so I'm told, I wasn't quite born yet), and Friday the 13th, almost an urban (rural) legend in movie form, seems to me to be about the dark side of youth in that era.

I know a lot of former cast members, writers, directors, etc. have tried to distance themselves from the franchise and consider it a stain on their resumes, but I think the Friday films, and horror in general, have artistic/literary value sort of like a macabre Aesop's fable. They tell a dark story, accompanied by a warning or a moral theme, with a conflict that isn't necessarily resolved at the end of the story... at least the best ones aren't. They leave you feeling uneasy, without being aware that you were even supposed to have digested any lesson or... really think at all. They may not really be complex or nuanced, but many stories, oral traditions, urban legends (the lovers out in the woods one, where the guy ends up swinging from a tree comes to mind) and such evolve similarly.

Anyway, my question is did you guys write this movie with the same intents or themes in mind as Wes Craven and John Carpenter, or were you just trying to put together a scary movie?

...when we started out to make Friday the 13th, we did not have any social themes in mind, but we were quite obviously creatures of that period and the zeitgeist demanded that the plot come out as it did. Rather than a condemnation of teens, I think it had more to do with what happens when you are consumed by your own delight...that was the first sin. Lust causes others to suffer because it is so thoughtless. And, by the same token, revenge punishes the guilty and the innocent no matter how justifiable.

I like the theme of Friday the 13th, how the entire story begins with one innocent, tragic young boy who drowned senselessly, sending his mother into a schizophrenic rage, driving her to murder not only those who were responsible, but all those who fit the same typology-- the young, attractive and lusty. There is definitely a warning here, a campfire story intended to both terrify and titillate the young and remind them of their own mortality. Perhaps one of the reasons 'Friday the 13th' has been so enduring is that contrary to what Roger Ebert may think, it does have something to say.

A mystery solved

Kudos to Crash for solving the mystery mask photo.

A photo of a mysterious yellow hock has been around the fan community for a while and no one seemed to know the story behind it. The mask was so intriguing because it was clearly old, apparently on a part 4 hood, and had characteristics of masks from several films, including inverted part 5 chevrons, a triangular part 6 style forehead chevron, part 4 eye cuts and part 6 style straps. Strange indeed.

Some had speculated it was an unused design from part 5; it appeared in a promo video for Friday the 13th part 5 as seen here. Note the dirt patterns on the left side of the face match perfectly, identifying it positively as the same mask. So we can say for certain this is indeed a sister mask to those made for one of the films.

Crash has concluded its likely to be a spare from part 3, and thus one of the original hocks produced. Given its slimmer appearance, larger eye cuts and 3/8 holes, this is entirely possible, although the fact that its photographic history as far as we can tell goes back to part 5 seems to suggest it could have been part of the "Roy" set that was produced for that film in 1984/85. Either way, its an interesting find.

For those of you who have facebook accounts, you can see a political argument I had with Ari Lehman (the first person to ever play Jason) on his facebook page. I have debates occasionally with Victor Miller (screen writer for Friday the 13th and the creator of Jason) and though we are from different ends of the political spectrum, I have found we agree on a lot of fundamentals and our debates have always been civil.

Ari, on the other hand, called me a "lackey" who "obeys the rich", told me I was "betraying the efforts of my ancestors" (because I didn't support the striking public sector unions in Wisconsin), told me I speak only "brainwashed drivel" and asserted that I was trying to "assuage [my] guilt" for betraying the working people of America. He claimed to be well read, sitting frequently in his public library and reading books on political theory and economics, yet none of this supposed learning made an appearance in this thread, or an earlier thread we debated the same topic on.

I don't get offended by other people's political beliefs, nor did I find his ad homs anything but amusing... the only frustrating thing really was his inability to support any of his positions with anything resembling logic or education. You could never accuse Ari of being dispassionate, thats for sure.

The funny thing is, I don't think we have any real fundamental differences in belief. I am a Libertarian who is as distrustful of government as I am corporations... Ari claims to have similar ideas. The man just loves his unions apparently, despite the fact that public sector unions are inherently corrupt, giving huge amounts of campaign money to the people they will later negotiate luxurious salaries and benefits with that dwarf comparable private sector benefits.

I have never met Ari in person, but if I do, I don't think I will be able to resist bringing up politics now. lol.

Something a little different... a Top Five List!

Just off the cuff here, I've rated what I think are the best fan-made Jason busts in existence.

1. His Unlucky Day (part 4), by James Mangrum. This gets the number one slot for a multitude of reasons... James's incredible fidelity to the original design, his improvements on that design (adding lifelike skin lines, pores and even gingivitis not present in the film appliances), his painting with translucent inks and the fact that its resin make this the greatest Jason piece anyone can own. If you were lucky enough to get in on the first run and get it painted by James himself, you indeed had a Lucky Day.

2. Hideous Looking Man (part 3 Winston version) by Crash Cunningham. One of the greatest artists in the Jason-fan universe, Crash created a stunning duplication of the Stan Winston mask originally made for Richard Brooker in part 3. As with James, Crash even improved on the detailing in the original design, and added acrylic teeth. Truly an ultimate collector's piece.

3. Silver Shampain Novelties 'New Blood' (part 7). Made from the screen-used appliances worn by Kane Hodder, so you can't get any more accurate than this guy. There is something so satisfying about owning something cast directly from a movie piece. These things unfortunately come with a medicore paint job that doesn't exactly match the movie makeup and the mouth is strangely filled in, but nonetheless a must-own for New Blood fans.

4. Horror at Higgins Haven (part 3 Doug White version) by Dead End Hollow. Josh at DEH does some of the best Jason bustwork out there, everything from Crazy Ralph to Pam (living and decapitated) and has sculpted what is probably the overall best part 3 DW Jason piece. This thing is light years beyond Itz-U in its faithfulness to the movie makeup, with my only small gripe being a too-small right eye. Josh's unique style comes through in all of his pieces, its tough to describe... a certain expressiveness, I guess, in the eyes and facial features make his pieces seem particularly lifelike.

5. 'Kill for Mother' (remake) by Jeremy Bohr. Jeremy has done a ton of Jason work but I think this is his crowning achievement. Though Jeremy is by his own account not one to go for perfection in reproducing a Jason design, he really pulled off something amazing with this piece, with its grotesque acrylic teeth, maniacal expression and faithfulness to the movie design. Outstanding work... also like his Roy and his JGTH.

Part 5: The Exhumation

You'll notice the blood on the axe cut and the fresher splatter on the cheek, mosts artists don't do this but in the scene where he first gets out of the grave he has the blood from his own headwound and the splatter was from the two guys he just killed. It was washed off in the rain as he got out of his grave, a nightmarish prelude to what Tommy would experience some time later...

The CJ... update

Update, Feb. 1. Its really looking good, although still a lot of details to work through. You'll notice a difference in the forehead in the top comparison, thats because the angle is slightly different (with the real deal turned toward you about 2-3 degrees more, thus showing where the sloping of the forehead begins). I am anticipating completion and molding by the end of March, based on the speed of my progress so far. I have noticed a lot of hits on the blog here lately, so thanks to everyone who makes this a regular stop! :D

Update Jan. 24. Still playing with the form, mostly in the cranium...

Still forming this guy and trying to be as exact as possible, results have been favorable so far. Here are a couple of comparisons showing what photos I am matching to. I've been using screen caps as well as behind the scenes photos so I can observe how his head looks as it moves and rotates onscreen. I have a long way to go on this guy...

Just two days later, and this guy is really shaping up nice... still just working on the form, but now that he has a neck his facial physiology makes more sense... I'm going for a 1:1 copy of Brian Wade's work here, with every little detail that I can nail down from photos.

Jan. 4 edit: here's another pic. I did the shoulders last night, so all ten pounds of clay are on him, but I'm going to need about a pound more I think...

New Project: The C.J.

3 days into sculpting this one, I'm going for a very accurate replication of the mask worn by C.J. Graham in part 6. Originally sculpted in 24 hours by effects artist Brian Wade when director Tom McLaughlin needed a replacement bust for a new actor, the mask was swimming in detail, so it will be quite a challenge to replicate, especially for a novice sculptor like myself. Pleased with the results so far though! Thanks for looking.

The original mask, by Jacques Plante

Above is a photo I found online while browsing images, showing the second prototype for the famous Jacques Plante medium size Fibrosport Elite street mask, on which the Jason mask was very closely based. This mask remained in the office of Jacques Plante, the man who invented and popularized the modern goalie mask, for many years and was auctioned off in 2007 by his heirs. The medium mask, which the Plante company of Magog, Quebec, Canada also made for American companies Cooper and Rally, was catalog number 653602. The Cooper version was also known as the hm7.

The major differences between the original Plante design and the Jason mask was in fabrication: the Plante mask was made of a sturdy fiberglass resin and was relatively thick: the hockey masks made for Friday the 13th part 3 were pulled in clear acrylic and were very thin and brittle. The Plante mask, which commonly had a back plate to attach the five straps to for extra security, also had padding on the inside so the mask didn't crack your face open like an egg if you were unlucky enough to be hit by a puck. The masks made for the Friday the 13th series were also somewhat more crudely sculpted: the discriminating eye will noticed the uneven forehead, the thumbprint in the lower left portion, mold chipping around the eyes and other anomalies that make the Jason design really unique.

The Plante masks, which were made from the late 1960's until the company closed its doors in 1976, were made in a very wide variety of styles and customized versions that fit your face perfectly were made as well, mostly for professional ice hockey players. The "street" mask that became iconic outside the hockey world in 1982, was available in white or beige and retailed for fifty dollars.

This one is going to be my keeper, I dig how it came out, just need straps. There's about five layers of paint and clear coat in the detailing, so this is a time consuming process but the end result is one of the most beautiful hocks in the franchise. Thanks for looking!

And now for something completely different...

So I've been brainstorming hockey masks at work lately and I had the idea to do a line of masks that are not featured in any of the films but appear on the VHS boxes. Since I don't have a cooper and don't know how to get one (and its just painted white anyway, how dull), I have selected the three masks from The Final Chapter, The New Blood and Jason Takes Manhattan for duplication.

These hocks differ greatly from the screen masks (or at least their onscreen appearance) in that the artists took a great deal of time and effort in texturing the surfaces (on the 7 and 8 especially) and of course making the part 4 one a bloody mess (which will be really fun).

So you all know these anyway, but here are the 3 masks I will be attempting after I finish up my current projects...

By far my most accurate part 7 and on the most accurate possible blank, I'm real pleased with how this one came out. I was surprised with how detailed the texture was on the surface of the Red 7, those effects guys really sanded the hell out of the screen mask, probably so that thin washes could really bring out the detail. Thanks to Mario Kirner for offering the Red 7 to the community, hopefully I can get one in the future (this paintup is for a friend).

An Editorial on the Hockey Masks as Art

As I've mentioned before here on the blog, every time I do a hock I learn more about the original film prop that I'm trying to replicate. Of course, when I'm trying to replicate it to the "Ultimate" level, i.e., taking a complex mask like the 3, 4, or 7 and getting every tiny little scratch and detail perfect, I use dozens of photos and screen caps to map out the screen mask and assemble it onto a frightstuff blank. Along the way I discover a great deal of details I had never even thought were present; its absolutely mind-blowing how truly complex the part 3 and 4 masks were and how many tiny, intricate things there are to attempt to reproduce. I have not yet truly captured every detail of either mask, nor can I ever hope to, all I can do is get it close.

It has given me a whole new respect for FX artists, and in particular, Robb Wilson King, Set Designer on Friday the 13th Part 3, who was charged with painting the original masks that appear in part 3 and 4. Based on some of the better photographs I've seen of the original masks, as well as screen shots I've used to map out these masks, I have to conclude that the prevailing sense among mask painters about the part 3/4 masks-- that they were simply beaten up with whatever tools were on hand, randomly scratched, poked, ripped and gouged and then just dirtied up before a layer of clear was thrown on-- is wrong.

Its wrong because the masks were not randomly attacked with tools in order to make them look used. There is an artistry to the damage and dirt on both masks, and clear elements of composition-- texture, balance, value, space and use of symmetry and lines are all evident on these masks, something I hadn't realized until I really attempted to reproduce them detail for detail.

On the part 3 mask for example, they made sure that the major damaged areas are roughly evenly spaced apart, and that each larger scuff is in its own quadrant of the mask. The "puck" mark in the middle of the forehead interrupts what would otherwise be a wide, blank space, drawing the eye to the center; the blackish rim of dirt on the outer edge of the left eye is actually a focal point from which dirt and damage fans out across the left side of the mask; the various dirty spots and scuffs that form a sort of "raccoon" or goggle pattern around the eyes and nose, encircling the brow are balanced across the mask. Major damage is balanced, though not duplicated (because that would look too fake) on each side. The left side has the dirty eye rim and a large streak of dirt running from the left eye like a tear drop; they are balanced on the right by the mouth scuff and the black streak on the right cheek. They put a thin, but elongated scratch across the upper left forehead so that side wouldn't be too bare, balancing that with a very dirty upper right border. Underneath it all are the beautiful wavy contours of the crackle medium, cracked into a variety of strips and blocks across the surface, following the curves of the plastic. If you could find that part 3 hock in the L.A. landfill its in today, you might truly be holding a work of art (depending on the condition its in).

The part 4 mask, though weathered very differently, has similar elements of composition, though its perhaps stronger on texture and the use of lines than the part 3. On the left side, there is a heavy bit of scratching with contoured lines that fan out from the outer left eye hole, reaching across the temple area, curving around the eye socket into the cheek and creeping onto the nose. The lines are not perfectly parallel but chaotically intersect and merge, forming a spiderweb pattern before disappearing toward the outer edge of the mask. The front of the mask has contrasting, roughly linear diagonal scratches that cover the mouth and parts of the forehead. They don't have the chaotic weaving of the eye marks, but are shorter and rigidly parallel in the mouth area. All of these details (and far more, too numerous to mention) combine to form a mask that appears to be naturally weather-beaten by random occurrence. The texture in the dirt, scratches and other tiny bits of damage make it really amazing close up and makes for a work of art that is really beautiful in its ugliness.

Unfortunately, almost none of these finer details can be seen on film. Thus, they are almost never replicated by most hock artists. Not to knock anyone, but it would be nice to see more people really do their homework and try to reproduce the artistry that Robb Wilson King had used in creating the originals. The part 7 mask made by KNB has similar compositional elements used, making it another real work of art.

Anyway, thats one of the reasons I like doing hocks. I like finding art in things that are dark and dismal I suppose, and I like to see a professional really dedicate himself to finer details, even if they don't really show up onscreen.

ULTIMATE 'Dick Warlock' mask, first photos...

I have to finish up a few odds and ends like adding a glossy coat to the blood drip and setting snaps in the cheeks, but he's basically done! This is by far the best mask of this style that I've done and I didn't make a mark on it without being able to match it to a photo of the original. Every scratch, every dot, every bit of paint is matched to the screen used with the highest degree of faithfulness that I could manage...

Of course the original is now owned by veteran stunt man Dick Warlock, hence the name. It was made in 1982 during production of Friday the 13th part 3 and painted by set designer Robb Wilson King. It is the only Jason mask to be seen in FOUR films, notably, the end of part 3, all of part 4, and the hallucination scenes of part 5, which is the final version seen here. It is also seen in the prologue sequence of part 7 (which features part 4 flashbacks). Even the part 5 and 6 masks are believed to be recasts of this one piece. Its reuse throughout the series makes it THE hockey mask of the genre, so I wanted to do it as much justice as possible. I will have more comparison photos and a finished version in the near future.

I was bored and made some tiny adjustments recently in my Ultimate III to make it more accurate, mostly grinding away at the inside corners of the eye holes, so I figured I'd post this up for all the world to see. You will of course notice there are tiny differences, like lens distortion making the middle appear wider and some color dissimilarity, but these are my camera's fault. In person its almost indistinguishable from my reference photos. I also do the chevron split on all of the masks, although it doesn't show up well in pics. Every time I do a mask I learn something new about it, and the part 3 with all its complexities has been very, very instructive.

Hi blogwatchers,

Fairly soon I'll be starting this one, an attempt to paint a near-perfect recreation of the mask used in parts 3, 4, and 5, as it appears in Tommy's hallucination in part 5. This will be the sequel to my Ultimate III and many of the same techniques as well as the same base coat will be used for this one, as well as a little inside info on how the movie masks were done...

Because of the lack of high-quality photos of the original mask, I'll be using a combination of photos and screen caps to try to recreate every scratch as exactly as possible. No easy task, mostly because Tom Savini and his FX crew beat the hell out of it during pre-production on part 4, leaving almost no square millimeter of the mask undamaged. The mask will be weathered in the same sequence as the original, so the Savini damage will be ON the clear coat rather than underneath it... its all about the little things. :)

This may be my best hock paint job so far. Its about six hours worth of layering up paint trying to capture every subtle detail of the screen used mask. I think I mostly succeeded, very happy with the results. I hesistate to call it "Ultimate 7" because Mario Kirner's fantastic Black Se7en has a shape advantage that is very difficult to replicate perfectly, but I do believe this is the most accurate paint job on a part 7 that I've ever seen or done. On Location: Part 2 (New Preston & Kent, CT)

Went out to see the part 2 filming location first hand yesterday, and what a beautiful area! Gorgeous homes, hilly terrain, and lots of money in that area-- one house even had its own waterfall right in the center of town. A bit of a rich New Yorker's paradise. I stopped at New Preston first and took a photo from where the phone booth stood in 1980, note that most of the same buildings are still standing, one in the back there even the same color thirty years later:

New Preston only has one major road, which is flanked by antique stores. This is the road Max drove his tow truck ("ASSHOLE THIS IS MY TRUCK"), and he turned left at the town hall seen at the top of the hill.

After New Preston I stumbled onto the road they drive up in Jeff's pickup in the following scene, which is at the intersection of 341 and 45 in Warren, CT.

Thanks to information from Campblood.net I found the incredibly remote and isolated lake where the bulk of part 2 was filmed, its called North Spectacle Pond and its a private pond in Kent only accessible by a maze of dirt roads that wind through all these woods. There is a boy's camp there (Kenmont), but it was not the camp they filmed at, I didn't have good enough info to find the real site, but I'm guessing it was down one of the many roads marked "no tresspassing." I did manage to get one shot of the pond:

I think the camp they filmed at was off the left edge of the photo. Next time... I will find it...

Bloody Part 3 DEH

This was fun to do, I got this blank from Josh at Dead End Hollow a few months ago and finally finished painting it. Its a great sculpt with excellent facial detailing, and now I can use it to scare family members.

Part 2 secret filming location?

I brought this up a while ago on Nightowl and wanted to revisit it here since the topic scooted off the first page pretty quick.

So a friend of my mom's used to have a drywall business and he worked on this old farmhouse in Warren, CT. The owner mentioned that one of the final scenes of Friday the 13th part 2 had been filmed in his storage room in the basement (the shrine to Pam scene that took place in Jason's little shack) when my mom's friend saw it it still looked exactly the same, there is a shelf on the back wall used for storing pickled things that you can see behind Pam's head in the film. There were even those weird tin doors on the room that you see in the film.

So this was a few years ago and we went there last October and the old farmhouse is now a restaurant (very reasonably priced) and the barn where the filming took place has since been remodeled into the living quarters of the owners. The staff at the restaurant had heard the same thing about F13 part 2 but didn't know anything further. We didn't go up to the house/barn, but I took a photo:

They even have their own breezeway leading to the restaurant. Very nice property and lovely place to eat, I think it was called the Rooster's Tail Inn or something like that. Hit it up if you are ever in Connecticut.

Ted White and THE DUKE

Here is a photo I found of Ted White (for the uninitiated, the stuntman who portrayed Jason in Part 4) and the man he doubled for, John Frickin-Wayne, aka The Duke. As you can see The Duke is a HUGE man. Ted White, who in his prime stood around 6'4" looks like a kid next to him. This photo is probably from the late 1950's or early 1960's. Ted White has appeared at conventions to sign autographs for fans, despite being 84 years old (57 when he portrayed Jason in late 1983). That makes him pretty awesome.

A Chronology of the curse of crystal lake

September 1930: Pamela Sue Voorhees, maiden name unknown, is born (Evidence: tombstone in part 4 gives birth year and color of birthstone on class ring in part 1 during decapitation indicates a sapphire).
1935: The Christy family opens Camp Crystal Lake in rural Crystal Lake, NJ, a few miles from the PA border. (Evidence: The famous 'Camp Crystal Lake' sign). June 13, 1946: Jason Voorhees born to Pamela & Elias Voorhees in Crystal Lake, NJ. Elias leaves the teenage Pamela shortly thereafter, but she never changes her name. Psychopathic tendencies begin to emerge in young Pamela. Jason suffers from a variety of birth defects, including alopecia, retardation, limited linguistic capability and severe craniofacial deformity. Pamela takes Jason, who she keeps mostly hidden from contact with the outside world, and moves around the NJ/PA area, taking odd jobs wherever she can find them, living at the YMCA and dingy apartments (Betsy Palmer's conceptualization of Pamela given in CLM; date of Jason's birth given in part 1 and year given in JGTH).

Circa 1950: Diana Voorhees born to Elias Voorhees and an unnamed second wife.

1950's: Pamela Voorhees moves back to Crystal Lake and takes a job as a cook at Camp Crystal Lake. Jason is an athletic youngster but fearful of other children and often keeps his face hidden. Pamela ensures he kept isolated from other children, never attends school (according to Ginny in part 2) and insists must be watched apart from the others by specially appointed counselors. Life settles into relative comfort for mother and son, despite obvious challenges.
Summer 1957: Jason drowns in Crystal Lake at age eleven while the two counselors assigned to watch him are off exploring each other's naughty bits. Pamela is enraged and vows revenge for their irresponsible behavior.
Summer 1958: 28-year-old Pamela murders counselors Claudette and Barry at the camp, which is subsequently closed down. Attempt to reopen in 1962 by Christy family fails due to bad water, further reinforcing the ominous reputation of the camp. Mr. Christy does nothing with the property thereafter, which falls into a state of disrepair. Around this time the locals begin to call the place "Camp Blood."

June 13, 1975: On Friday the 13^th, Pamela Voorhees, age 45, returns and slaughters the new camp counselors at the almost-reopened Camp Crystal Lake, recently purchased by Steve Christy (1943-1975) from his parents. Pamela Voorhees is decapitated by young counselor Alice Hardy. Alice later claimed to have been attacked by Pamela's son as she sat in a boat on the lake. Curiously, her head is never recovered and her headless body is buried in an unmarked grave in a small rural cemetery a few miles outside the camp. In 1979 her former husband, Elias purchases a gravestone which, possibly due to hastily written instructions, ends up with a typo death date. After Jason's bloody rampage five years later, her head was located in his possession and interred with the body.
August 1975: Alice Hardy, only survivor of Mrs. Voorhees' murderous rage, disappears from her home in Crystal Lake. Locals speculate she may have gone back to the scene of the murders to find some closure and contemplate "the boy" who attacked her. Unbeknownst to Alice, the boy may have been watching, and followed her to her own house where she was murdered. According to legend, "there was blood everywhere."
1978: Christine Higgins, age 17, has a brief encounter with a "hideous looking man", commonly believed to be Jason Voorhees, out in the forest near her family's farm house in Green Valley, NJ. She survives, but doesn't remember how. This is Jason's first known attack on a person other than his mother's killer, though in this case he stopped short of murder.

June 13-16, 1980: Jason Voorhees, age 34, emerges from the woods to murder several camp counselors at a counselor training center on the fifth anniversary of his mother's death. Two later murder sprees at Higgins Haven and a summer home a few miles from the camp leave dozens dead, including the killer himself, who suffers a fatal head wound at the hands of 12-year-old Tommy Jarvis. Tommy is plagued by post-traumatic stress, hallucinations and severe anxiety and begins taking a variety of medications, including Thorazine, Ritalin, Valium and Percodan. (medication list in 'A New Beginning' indicates Jarvis began his medications in April 1978, possibly due to trauma of parents' separation, which of course increased substantially after his encounter with Jason) It is publicly stated that Jason's body was cremated, although he was secretly buried in an unmarked grave in Eternal Peace Cemetery a few miles outside of Crystal Lake. Some years later a headstone was purchased for him by Elias Voorhees.
July 1985: Deranged paramedic Roy Burns is killed by seventeen-year-old Tommy Jarvis after a bloody killing spree at a halfway house while impersonating the late Jason Voorhees. (Jarvis's medication list mention a "doctor review" in "July 1985" as the final entry, presumably right before his transfer to the halfway house.) Tommy, still mentally unstable, flips out after the incident and temporarily believes he is Jason, seriously wounding a health worker.
June 12, 1986: After having been released from a mental hospital, Tommy Jarvis, age 18, and friend Allen Hawes exhume Jason's grave. The killer rises from his tomb and resumes his killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake, now reopened as Camp Forest Green, before being chained to the bottom of Crystal Lake the following evening by Jarvis in an attempt to satisfy a metaphysical need for Jason to return to his original grave in order to rest in peace. The only surviving adults, Tommy and Megan send the children home and never tell the police that Jason is in the lake.
October 13, 1986: Ten-year-old Tina Shepard's father, John dies when the dock he was standing on collapses from her psychokinetic anger. Tina spends the next several years in and out of mental hospitals as she copes with her guilt. Jason is still chained underwater for the next six years. Around this time Camp Forest Green/Crystal Lake is shut down for good and the cabins are finally torn down (Stephen tells some campers that the cabins were torn down "a few years ago" in Jason Goes to Hell).

October 1992: Tina Shepard defeats a resurrected Jason with her telekenesis at age 16. (Quote from John Carl Buechler stating the span of time between Mr. Shepard's death and the Jason murders was about six years to his mind in CLM), but not before Jason murders 14 vacationers.
June 1993: Jason Takes Manhattan. After committing multiple homicides on a cruise ship and stalking the remaining boat occupants through the streets of New York, Jason is severely burned by toxic waste in the sewers. He finds a new wardrobe and mask and walks fifty-three miles through the countryside back to Crystal Lake, NJ.August 4, 1993: Jason Goes to Hell. The FBI have been aware of the legend of Jason Voorhees for some time, but facing stonewalling by local authorities and a lack of evidence had always blamed copycat killers. Having investigated the murders in New York, the feds tracked Jason back to his native haunts, where they ambush him on August 2, 1993 and destroy him with a mortar attack. (Jason's coroner's tag gives this date, according to a rare photo in the official JGTH magazine). Jason subsequently body hops until he is reborn through the body of his sister Diana, then killed by his niece Jessica Kimble with a specially forged dagger designed to destroy the curse that keeps Jason earthbound. He is dragged to Hades by demons where he remained until his resurrection by Freddy Krueger in 2003.

Finished this today, the whole thing only took me a day to do. This one was a really fun departure from the painstaking detailing of the part 3's. Tom Savini and his crew really beat the hell out of this mask, supposedly with carpeting and any rough edge they could find on set. Duplicating it is pretty easy, and of course the blood stain is the funnest part, although looking at the finished product I wonder why they chose purple-- it looks like a wine stain, I always thought dried blood was sort of a rusty brown color. Hit me up if you want one of these...

Hi, so I am going to be busy for the next month or so working on masks for people but I am starting to brainstorm for my next major projects, which I may start by the end of this month. I am going to be attempting a 1:1 "Ultimate Warlock", a.k.a. the Dick Warlock mask or the "Dream" mask, the only mask used in 3 Friday films and now owned by stuntman Dick Warlock. This should be a fairly straightforward endeavor, I've already done one that was pretty close, the most major problem was the basecoat, which will be a custom job on the Ultimate version as it was on Ultimate 3. I have never seen any real good closeup photos of this mask (besides the one at Fridaythe13thprops), so it will be done with a combination of screen caps and other photos.

Note: I will only be doing "Ultimate" versions of the part 3 and 4 masks because they are the only ones in the series that have very complex natural weathering and detailing is very difficult. The Roy, part 6, 7, etc. don't require "Ultimate" status, IMO because they were weathered using rather simple techniques that mask painters like myself commonly use today, making them rather easy to duplicate.

Also I will be working on a new sculpt soon, which I expect will take me about one year to finish... I haven't made a final decision on what I'm going to do but I have it narrowed down to two possibilities: a 1:1 replica of the Doug White part 3 makeup job cast in resin, or a 1:1 '75 Kirk. Both would be a serious challenge, I have heard that the Kirk is far more difficult because getting the features perfect requires incredibly subtle changes and a light touch; as long as you give him a droopy eye and a pig-face, you can pull of a part 3 Jason pretty well, his features are so bold. I'm still new to sculpting, so thats why I'm taking a year or so to do this one. Right now I'm leaning toward the Kirk, if anyone has any input as to which they'd rather see I hope you will contact me, either leave a comment here or email me or contact me on the forums. So just to show how accurate Ultimate III is I put these together earlier today. My camera is not the best quality (hence the pink chevrons), but as you can see I got damn near every scratch, ding, spot and paint crackle on the original. The part 3 is perhaps the most complex mask in the franchise and the most difficult to pull off accurately but I went all out on this one, all the crackle is hand-engraved rather than drawn on so it looks convincingly real even closeup in person. The closest you can get to the real thing...

Ultimate III is finished

Ultimate III Sneak Preview

Over the past two weeks I have been painstakingly matching the original part 3 mask basecoat using acrylic mixtures. Its more of a challenge than you might think, because screen caps disagree widely on what color the mask was (showing it as tan, yellow, white, ivory, etc.) and even different editions of part 3 can show drastically different colors in the same scene, making screen caps basically unreliable for color matching. There are only a small handful of actual photos of the mask that have been made public, so I have mostly used those, but even they show slightly different coloring, possibly depending on the kind of film that was used, the exposure, aging of films and photos since 1982, etc. After months of study I have concluded the color was a golden tan, and have since applied the mixture to my mask. The end result is above, and I believe it to be very faithful to the original. In person, the color has incredible versatility and can appear various shades of tan and yellow in different lighting, very similar to the original.

I will begin detailing soon and will have more sneak previews of that too.

The Great Frighstuff Debate, Part II: Further Evidence

One of many unsubstantiated theories posited by Ken's detractors is that what he sells is a buck made from the part 3 hero mask-- this is supposed to explain the remarkable similarities between Ken's masks and the part 3 hero I presented above. There are two scraps of evidence that are supposed to back this up:

1. There is an indentation below one of the mouth holes on the left side of Ken's buck, indicating a high miss-drilling in the part 3 hero and a hint of "mold divot" on the lower border. All the divots in Ken's mold can be characterized as being actually representative of drilled holes in the part 3 hero mask.

2. There are circular halos around some of the snap holes on the back of Frightstuff blanks and the "1988 blanks", indicating there were still snaps present in the mask when it was recast. Allegedly, Ken then attempted to alter the original buck to hide evidence before he presented photos of it.

This theory is totally bogus, and here is why:

1. The snap holes in all of the blanks line up perfectly with photos Ken provided of the buck, with no evidence of tampering on the buck. (Click images for better version)

2. If the mask were a recast of the drilled part 3 hero, the divots in Ken's buck should line up perfectly with the drilling on the part 3 hero mask, which is not the case.

Furthermore, if Ken recast the part 3 hero with the snaps still present, this would have to be before they were removed in late 1983 or early 1984 for photography that was done for the posters made to promote the release of The Final Chapter. This contradicts many other presumptions from Frightstuff detractors, that Ken only "acquired the mold after Martin Becker died" or "originally only had 1988 blanks and no mold until 2006." The speculation never ends, but the proof is right in front of us. In many photos of the part 4 hero, you can even see the divot in Ken's mold above the hole on the right side above the Chevron, indicating is was deliberately drilled low.

Other theories as to the origin of Ken's mold/buck exist, (such as "he has a part 7 buck, or recast a part 7 mask) but merit even less analysis than this, as they are based on no reliable evidence. I welcome all debate and challenges via email or on the forums. Thanks for looking and keeping an open mind on this debate.

The Great Frightstuff Debate

The question over the truthfulness of Ken's claim to the "original mold" that was used during part 3 has been hotly debated for a couple of years now, having produced an astounding amount of bitter animosity, name calling, outrageous claims and overall discord among collectors and fans. I know people on both sides of the debate are sick of having it, but it doesn't seem to end because issues never get resolved-- and in the minds of many people, they never will be.

In doing photographic analysis for my ULTIMATE III mask I found a truly astounding degree of consistency between Frightstuff masks and the original masks used during filming of part 3. Ken and other people may say a variety of things about different details (color of the masks, size, etc. etc.) but the proof for me is in the blanks themselves. Observe. Left column are the eye sockets of a PETG Frightstuff blank purchased late last year, with the eyes illuminated by a lamp in the background, showing every detail in the plastic. At right are various closeups of the "hero" mask from part 3 that I obtained from photos and a screencap in my collection:

And here is the same photo, marked on to draw your eye to certain details... note the overall contour of the eye socket is a perfect match to a Frightstuff, and that there are small dents around both sockets that perfectly correspond to imperfections in the original mask. If Ken were a faker as claimed, its doubtful he would have scrutinized photos with this degree of detail, as its not necessary to fool most people, especially when you are only making twenty bucks a blank. Matter of fact, I don't think anyone else has even noticed that the little bald spot on the lower lip of the right eye socket in the original is there because of an indentation in the blank... who would have known? No one. Regardless of what sort of speculation and heresy floats around the forums, the proof is in the blanks themselves-- and I will only use Frightstuff blanks for my projects, because only they have the details that I require.

The Old Collection...

This is just a photo from last fall of the beginnings of my collection, the top two part 3's have since been sold, the white one is a custom WIP, and the Dream Mask at lower right I still have but will be selling pretty soon.

Except for the white one, these masks are all basecoated with Krylon Buttercream, which I no longer use, although coupled with some washes/weathering it can look a nice golden tan, which is what the original part 3/4 masks were colored.

I will have another in-prog photo of the ULTIMATE III along some day soon.

This is the beginning of my mission to create a perfect 1:1 replica of the hero mask in part 3. I spent 3+ hours on each eye, comparing with about 70 screen caps and 5 or 6 behind-the-scenes photos (which are vastly more useful)as well as previous masks that I've done and for the first time I am totally satisfied with how the eyes came out. The snaps will be applied soon, followed by the basecoat and the engraving. All the little tricks and minute details I've learned from my previous 3 part 3 masks are going to make all the difference with this one. Fun stuff!!!

I used some acrylic paint and resprayed the Chevrons so they are a color approximating the one on the screen-used mask. I used a photo of the mask from Crystal Lake Memories as a reference because screen caps are notoriously unreliable.

I have begun work on my ULTIMATE 3 mask, and it is turning out BEAUTIFULLY... for sure this is going to be the most perfectly accurate part 3 mask ever done. The eyes came out perfectly thanks to some great photos I have of the original prop. I just hope the rest of the process goes well... I will have a sneak peak of the fully trimmed blank up shortly.

The Roy

Just finished and still needs the hardware, but very happy with how my first Roy came out... I may darken the blue marks slightly with a little airbrushing, but other than that and the hardware, this is a finished product.

My next project, other than work for customers will be my ULTIMATE III... my 1:1 near-perfect copy of the original hero mask from part 3. I think I finally have enough information and practice with all the masks that I've done to begin my masterwork, and I've even found screen-accurate straps on ebay (of course). The principle difference between my previous 3 (seen below) and the upcoming one will be in the paint cracking technique. Instead of drawing it on in pencil, its going to be etched into the basecoat, then washed and clearcoated over, so it SHOULD look much more authentic than previous masks. Since I'm going for microscopic accuracy, this mask may take about a month to do.

I am also nearly finished with the process of improving my latex sculpt "That Horrible Face" to give him a nose and mouth area that are much more faithful to the Doug White makeup job (now that I finally have good profile pics!) The improvement is already coming along great, just need to make a few final adjustments and I will have pictures up soon. I couldn't do it real close up because my cheap camera will distort the features but this shows how accurately the eyes are cut... I think the secret to really capturing the character of each mask is getting the eyes right.

This is a mask I just recently finished (albeit without straps yet), a replica of the mask worn by Dan Bradley in the triple decap scene. It includes a lot of very small details that don't show up all that well on camera, but it came out pretty great. I am currently doing a NECA repaint and following that will be a Roy.

With this I was trying to create a near-perfect copy of the only mask used in 3 films, parts 3, 4 and 5, now owned by Stuntman Dick Warlock. I sent the top photo to Mr. Warlock, who thought it was pretty cool. I thought it was pretty cool that he actually replied! I'm very happy with how this came out, I obsessively put in every mark and scratch I could find from the original, even painstakingly recreating all the scratching in the upper-left part almost exactly as it was. God, what I would do to see the original in person...

"I'll Never Forget That Horrible Face!"

This latex piece went into production in October. I call him 'That Horrible Face' after a quote from Chris Higgins oft-ridiculed monologue from part 3. I wanted to make Jason look really menacing like he did up in the window at the end. I'm working on a bloody version right now and have this available as a hood as well.

Personally, I prefer Doug White's makeup job (on which this is based) than the much more detailed part 4, which I think just went over the top on making Jason as ugly as possible and giving him mysterious burns on the entire left side of his head. Great design nonetheless, but I prefer the part 3 as a more authentically mongoloid look. White's Jason, based on a combination of Savini's original design and the part 2 makeup, appears to be a sufferer of Neurofibromatosis, Alopecia and a variety of other birth defects. He's not a zombie yet, just really friggin hard to kill.

Since I have alot of space here I'll say this: I think the Stan Winston makeup looks like a vamipire from Buffy or Blade or some other contemporary vampire movie. Its a great design, but I'm glad the producers went with a more authentically "Jasonesque" design.

On a side note, whenever I look at this thing I still have to make the Jason grunt noise he does a few times in part 3. I must have made monster noises a few hundred times while I was sculpting this thing, it kinda brings it to life for me.

Scabboy on Nightowl mentioned he thought this was one of the top 4 part 3 busts ever produced, which is a very high honor, I think the other best ones in terms of screen accuracy are the MMFX, ITZ-U, and the recent Lewis Frye bust. All phenomenal pieces.

The Hero II

This was my second part 3 mask and it has gotten rave reviews all across the community. A lot of people don't realize how badly crackled the paint on the original part 3 mask was because the smaller details can't be seen on film. It does however appear in photos that were taken on set, including in the best photos of that mask in existence-- the cover to the Final Chapter VHS tape, which shows extensive paint cracking. Anyway, here are a few photos of my version.

The blank is a clear PETG frightstuff. The hock is also bent to look like the one in the film so that I can put it on my display without having the straps squeeze the shit out of it.

This mask takes me about a week to do because the crackle alone is a mind-numbing 3 days work! The rest of it is fairly easy. A lot of guys on the forums have said this is the most accurate part 3 they had ever seen. I concur. And I'm not afraid to say, this is THE most screen accurate part 3 mask since the original one from 1982.

Some folks suggested I create a venue for the display of some of my artwork, and since thats what a lot of artists seem to do I decided to give it a shot. My name is Jason and I do Jason stuff. I specialize in super-accurate hockey masks, especially part 3 and 4 replicas, which are probably the hardest to nail down with a very high degree of faithfulness to the screen used hocks. I've got em down to a science now, so its time to start showing them off.

In addition to hocks, I have done one display bust so far, a latex part 3 display I call "That Horrible Face" after a quote at the end of that Chris Higgins "quiet can be deceiving" monologue.
